A recipient of the 2007 Visionary Award from the Wisconsin Ceneter for Social Justice, Ya’qub has been very active in the fight to earn equal rights for those disenfranchised men and women returning from American prisons. As an advocate he has worked with the Urban League, Madison Area Urban Ministries, The University of Wisconsin, Voices Beyond Bars (Chairperson), and was co-founder of the Uhuru Family Initiative in Madison, Wisconsin. As a writer, poet, and artist he describes his works as an expression of the frustrations, pains, struggles, loves, and passions relative to those who are forgotten.
