I'm a botanist fascinated by plants (and other life-forms) from around the world, but have a special interest in the flora of the Greek island of Crete (Kriti), ever since my first visit there in 1984.

Nerdy notes on camera kit: From 1982 to 2003 I took 35mm slides with a Nikon F3, most of the close-ups with a Micro-Nikkor 55mm f/2.8 macro lens. 550 of 3600 slides have so far been scanned into digital. In 2005 I moved to digital and until 2006 used a Canon PowerShot Pro1. From 2007 I used a Nikon D200, replacing it in 2017 with a D7200, on both bodies using two lenses: an AF-S DX Nikkor 17–55mm f/2.8G IF-ED and an AF Micro-Nikkor 60mm f/2.8D (upgraded to the AF-S G ED version in 2019). From 2019, I started using an AF-P Nikkor 70–300mm f/4.5–5.6E ED VR, from 2021 an AF-S DX Nikkor 12–24mm f/4G IF-ED and from 2024 an AF-S Nikkor 200–500mm f/5.6E ED VR. From 2015 I have also been using a Sony DSC-RX100M2 compact camera and from 2022 also an Apple iPhone 13 SE.
