So, what is a cultural landscape?

A cultural landscape can be defined as a geographic area, including its cultural and natural resources, associated with an historic event, activity, or person, or exhibiting other cultural or aesthetic values. Preserving cultural resources includes the tangible objects of historical significance, such as landscapes, buildings, and structures, but also the intangible items like traditional knowledge, lifestyles, and practices.

Cultural landscapes have been recognized by the National Park Service (NPS) since 1983. The Park Cultural Landscapes Program is a NPS-wide program involving staff in parks, regional offices, and the service's Washington office with a range of roles committed to the preservation mission.

Part of the process of preserving cultural landscapes is documenting and sharing the stories attached to these resources, extending their value and their existence. Please join us by sharing your own images, videos, and stories on these cultural landscapes!
