I cycle thousands of miles every year in the UK and on mainland Europe. Using a bicycle allows me to easily carry as much photographic equipment as I want and move at a speed that enables me to look rather than just see. I photograph shapes that interest me in colour and monochrome. I have a particular interest in industrial architecture, heavy machinery and sculpture. Sometimes I allow my enthusiasm for poetry to guide my work and either fit an image to a poem or use a poem as a catalyst when creating an image, whichever seems to work at the time. I try to create images that have something to say or an interesting back story. I regard myself as a predominantly straight photographer and my work is informed by Jean-Eugene Atget, Walker Evans and the New Topographics photographers.
I photograph using digital cameras mainly with 35mm full frame sensors and conventional film using a combination of 35mm and 6x7 medium format film stock. I am also interested in experimenting with HDR, pin hole and Holga cameras. I primarily use Lightroom with an occasional experimental foray into Photoshop but mainly confine my manipulations to traditional darkroom practices. I make pictures rather than take pictures.
