Nate in Japan

Early 2005 I moved to Japan to see a little bit more of the world. One of the first things I did when I got here was buy a digital camera - a little Pentax Optio S5i "point and shoot" (big mistake - don't buy one of those if you can avoid it). Originally I set up this flickr account as a kind of online photo diary - a place to show all the people back home a little of what I am experiencing.

Since then things have changed somewhat. Somewhere along the line I remembered what it was like to be a photographer and I missed it. To that end I started planning my shots: staking out positions to capture interesting moments, thinking about photographic composition and lighting rather than just thoughtlessly pushing a button. Then, mid 2006 I lashed out and bought a Nikon D50. From that point on the world of photography changed for me.

Now in my photo stream, instead of seeing ameteur-ish snapshots you will (hopefully) find photos actually worth looking at! Of course you will also find some fairly average images of the "point and shoot" kind (usually taken while drunk at karaoke) but (fingers crossed) the good should now outweigh the bad.

While I am by no means a "Pro" yet I'm working on it. More and more people are enquiring about my work and recently a Japanese Restaurant in England commissioned a whole series of my images for their display. You can also find one of my images in Metropolis Magazine (issue 664/2006), the leading magazine for foreigners in Japan.

It's a start...

Now I have three flickr accounts. This one is still kind of like my online diary, only I am focusing more on high quality images these days rather than the snap shots I started out taking. I have another account to host my studio/studio-esque portraits and a third that hosts only the best images from both accounts.

I was so lucky to have met this talented photographer. It was full of surprise to know Nate-san, that he has very similar eye sight through the lens, yet technically I'm nowhere near as great as Nate-san ;-) I hope one day I can be able to take photos of what in our eyes as wonderful as he does. Cheers, my dear friend.… Read more

Nate is a very talented , inspirational and a good friend who is postive and encouraging. I was lucky enough to meet him right at the very start of shooting, he gave me insight and motivation to shoot better. His portrait work is still some of my favorite stuff, that I come back again and again.
