In the past if I liked your work I would just subscribe to the RSS feed of your images, but decided that I should really participate a bit more in the Flickr community, so have been adding people as contacts and making favs, using keyword and geotagging images etc (though still pretty slack at adding comments to photographs I like). If I have added you as a contact it is only so you know that someone (else) admires your work - I don't expect a contact in return unless you do actually like my images.
