Since I have known Nickleen for a while and she got me onto this whole Flickr cult, I probably should have written this a while ago. However I never knew how to write it properly. And I want to be able to say, “I knew her when….” First of all, as a photographer, Nickleen has very few artists who are on par with her. Her ability to capture mood in a two dimensional image is breathtaking. I have been with her when she has taken a photograph, seen it posted, and felt myself pulled right back to the moment when it was taken. Her eye for detail in just the smallest (and largest) subjects is astonishing. I have looked at many of the same subjects before she photographed them. Seeing her interpretation of them later makes me say, “How did she see it that way?” More than that though, Nickleen is every other photographer’s best friend. The wealth of knowledge that she can draw from makes her an asset for anyone in need of help. This is especially true for a beginner hack like me. As much as I tried to cling to film, Nickleen gently coaxed me into the digital age with a camera that was perfect for me. And she was there to help me grow with it. Although my work is still quite pedantic, it wouldn’t even be there without the help and guidance of someone who was willing to watch and support me while I worked…and made sure I got up before dawn to get the best lighting. Pay attention to Nickleen’s photo stream now. Then you too will be able to say “I knew her when…” as well.

Nickleen is my favorite photographer on flickr. Certainly, one cannot know the work of every photographer on this sprawling, complex network; however, of what I've seen, and what I continue to see, Nickleen's work is consistently outstanding and always interesting. She's a master of mood, and her pictures are amazing displays of the richness of the everyday. I envy her ability to balance light and dark elements, regardless of subject or medium. Her work is not pretentious, she doesn't build herself up, and she seems little concerned about whether her photos register within flickr's ridiculous algorithm of "interestingness." Her photos actually are interesting... Perhaps my unqualified recommendation of this talented and humble photographer can be stated simply: When she uploads photos, I look at them. Immediately. And I am always thrilled with what I see...
