About the Nationaal Archives of the Netherlands

The National Archives in The Hague preserves almost one thousand years of history, in the form of over 125 kilometres of archives, almost 300,000 maps and drawings and more than 15 million photos. The archives were created by the national government, but archives from private institutions and individuals are also preserved at the National Archives as interesting supplements to the government archives.

Bij het Nationaal Archief in Den Haag ligt bijna duizend jaar geschiedenis opgeslagen in 125 kilometer archieven, bijna 300.000 kaarten en tekeningen en ruim 15 miljoen foto’s. De archieven zijn afkomstig van de rijksoverheid. Daarnaast vormen archieven van particuliere instellingen en personen een interessante aanvulling op de overheidsarchieven.

About the National Archives historical photo collections

The National Archives photo collection consists of more than 15 million photos that cover a period of more than a hundred years of national and international history. More than 1.000,000 digitalised photographs can be viewed on our online image bank. Over 400.000 photos are available for free and immediately downloadable. The majority of the National Archives photo collection is digitalized in high resolution as part of the Images for the Future project. The National Archives manages important documentary photograph collections. These collections contain genres and subjects such as press photography, social and historic documentary photography, reports on the former Dutch colonies, football and the Royal Family.

De fotocollectie van het Nationaal Archief bestaat uit meer dan 15 miljoen foto’s die een periode van honderd jaar nationale en internationale geschiedenis bestrijken. Meer dan 1.000.000 gedigitaliseerde foto’s zijn te bekijken op de online beeldbank. Ruim 400.000 foto's kunt u gratis op hoge resolutie downloaden en gebruiken. Het belangrijkste deel van de fotocollectie van het Nationaal Archief is gedigitaliseerd binnen het digitaliseringsproject Beelden voor de Toekomst. Het Nationaal Archief beheert belangrijke documentaire fotocollecties. Deze collecties bevatten genres en onderwerpen als persfotografie, sociale en historische documentaire fotografie, reportages over de voormalige Nederlandse koloniën, voetbal en de Koninklijke familie.

About the historical photo collections of Spaarnestad

The Spaarnestad collection consists of a unique and rich archive with 12 million photos from the 19th and 20th centuries from all over the world. The collection consists of images from newspapers, magazines, publishers and photo agencies. The core of the collection is the photo archive of De Spaarnestad, a magazine publisher founded in Haarlem in 1906, which later became VNU.

De Spaarnestad collectie bestaat uit een uniek en rijk archief met 12 miljoen foto’s uit de 19e en 20e eeuw van over de hele wereld. De omvangrijke collectie bestaat uit beeldmateriaal dat afkomstig is van kranten, tijdschriften, uitgeverijen en fotobureaus. De kern wordt gevormd door het fotoarchief van de Haarlemse rooms-katholieke drukkerij en uitgeverij De Spaarnestad (het latere VNU, nu Sanoma.
