Michael Seidman
Drag to set position!
I used to take photographs in black and white. Sometimes I’d do my own darkroom work. Spotmatic, Rollie, like that. I guess I discovered digital cameras with a Nikon, a couple of years into the ‘90s. That’s when I started experimenting, the keyboard was more comfortable than the darkroom. Thousands of photos flowed. Most of them were mediocre, enough were good enough to make Flickr a viable showcase.
Then things fell apart. I was made redundant. I freelanced (I’d been an editor specializing in crime fiction), lectured, aged. I developed a benign familial tremor, could no longer hold a camera steady. Had brain surgery to correct the situation, but only on one side of my body. Couldn’t type well or easily. Lung cancer—beat that sucker. Ah, it really gets boring.
Started concentrating on salvaging my old photos. The computer died. My grandson gave me his old one. RIP. Now I do what I can on my iPad with free apps.
There’s no point to this rant, I was just feeling sorry for myself, and I figure howling into the wind is safe. So I did it. Someday soon I’ll make it all go away.

King of chameleon photography. Like snowflakes that never repeat, mseidman never repeats. Pure creative genius. Multifaceted to the nines. I think his palette is shaped like a Möbius strip. Break the rules, SS

as much as i like and even love the work of my friends and contacts, there is one flickrite that keeps in me a permanent state of awe...i consider him flickr's FILTER KING!! mseidman has used his imagination, sense of humor, creativity, camera, filters, and god knows what else, to create an unending gallery of masterpieces....i believe he invented the concept of blurring and bokeh....he creates textures that i've never seen before....his experience with colors, p.o.v., composition, d.o.f., yada yada, proves to us that he's a master behind the lens, as well as the finished product... i actually believe i'll need to create a Faves page, solely for him, as i can't seem to leave his photostream without a minimum of two faves per visit...and this, after i drool over his latest creations for a looong time...it can be exhausting -- in a good way, that is.... my personal favorite set of his is the "new york sketchbook"...having lived in manhattan for years, i can appreciate the nuances, idiosynchrasies, humor, and the best and worst that city has to offer....i can find it all in michael's detailed, sometimes subtle, and always fascinating interpretations of his life there....and his journey to europe ain't too shabby either! i've run out of adjectives that all of his other fans haven't already stated in these testimonials, but i am grateful that i found his wonderful images, because whether he's showing us the lighter or darker side of life, he put plenty of thought into the creation and execution of his often complex images.... oh, before i forget, keep an eye on his tongue-in-cheek and pun-filled titles and explanations of his pics....woody allen's got nothing on him!
Read lessI think about the quote below every time I look at Michael's amazing work (I look at every image he posts -- each one is a treasure ). "Nothing is less real than realism. Details are confusing. It is only by selection, by elimination, by emphasis that we get at the real meaning of things." Georgia O'Keeffe
If we could FAV artists as well as art, mseidman would be at the top of the list...a world class talent...
I have been following MIchael's work since his time on fotolog, from where we both migrated at much the same time. He is one of a small group of people on flickr whose work I always follow. All have a common characteristic that their work is immediately recognisable - standing out as theirs and theirs alone.
.free your eyes from everything you think you have seen before and enter his world and slowly allow yourself surprises (some sweet yes some not so but all ohs--ok with a capital O) wherever you look and you will look and suddenly see [silence can be a reaction but look for words! i usually try to,
Michael is the prince of the inner soul. If Thoreau or Emerson were alive to day with a mouse and camera in hand, they would become fast friends of Michael.
I remember the shock of seeing Michael's,"cold", posted in January 2005! It was love at first sight and the honeymoon's not over! Michael's creations are always well composed, beautifully crafted and provocative. With a simple stroke of his photoshop filter, he paints a mundane street scene with mystery and drama. I thoroughly enjoy his virtual adventures and appreciate his encouraging comments. Take a dip in this fast moving stream and prepare to be amazed.

Michael was one of my first contacts on flickr. I think I've been lurking on his stream long enough to write one of these things and know what I'm talking about. From the beginning, he has been encouraging and supportive for which I'm forever grateful. His creative talent is both humbling and inspiring. I'm a huge fan of his photographs and his artwork that show an honest, often humorous view of life. Thanks Michael, for sharing your world with us.

Both Michael's photography and his creative skills have been of highliest inspiration for me, since I found his wonderful photostream at flickr. Realibly surprising and refreshing in everything he does, I am always looking forward, day by day, to see his new offerings and I have never felt deceptioned. What I find the most remarkable of his work is, that there is an enormous amount of technical knowledge and skills behind his work, but he never makes it apparent, it is there without us noticing and therein lies true artistry.

There's something about Michael's photographs that follow a different path. Frequently people and sometimes things caught in his frame are busy trying to wrangle out or escape their puny labels. I would love to follow him around and see things thru his eyes, where the things caught in his vision suddenly gain a life of their own. i really can't explain it, i can only tell you that there's magic in seidmanVision!
