Traditional music performer, keen fisherman, husband & father of three, I have taken photography up as my main hobby since the tail end of 2009, and since then, my interest in this subject has just continued to grow! I live here in the U.K, residing in the Fenland area that lies at the northern tip of the county of Cambridgeshire in East Anglia.
Living in the fens provides me with great photo oppertunities, with flat land that stretches for miles displaying awsome sunsets, many rivers and dykes with an abundance of wildlife, and of course, a few traditional music festivals, which convieniently mean that I can take both my camera and my guitar along! :o)
Most of my photo's taken during 2010, were shot using a Fujifilm S1800, 18x zoom (equivalent to 28-504mm on a 35mm camera), I still use this camera occasionally, though now I am using a Panasonic Lumix GH1 with the 14 - 140mm kit lens. I have not yet purchased a dedicated macro lens for my GH1, however, I am currently utilising two alternative methods to get closer to my subjects. The first is a modified Pentax-M 50mm f1.4 lens, I have adapted this to fit my GH1 with additional extension rings and am quite pleased with the results it brings. My second option is to use screw on close-up & Macro filters, these are very effective at high magnifications, but tend to have a much shallower depth of field and also cause quite a noticeable amount of colour fringing in the images!
I have, for about 6 months now been creating "high dynamic range" images. I came across this genre of photography whilst researching infa red photography at the same time that I was using my Fujifilm camera. Upon discovering that I would not be able to attempt IR photography using the S1800 (limited shutter speeds & no screw thread on the lens), I turned my attention to HDR and began creating multiple exposure HDR images.
Another one of my main subjects of interest to photograph is wildlife, be it birds, mammals, various creepy crawlies and when/if I happen to spot one, as they are quite rare here in the fens, reptiles! (One does hold out hope on the wild reptile front!)
I love venturing out to take macro shots of insects, arachnids and other invertibrates, in fact, this is one of my favourite areas of photography... There's always something special about seeing a creature we take for granted as common and usually dismiss. They suddenly become so much more interesting when viewed through a macro lens with all the detail that you have never seen before! It's almost like being a child again - carefully watching that spider creating it's web! It really does bring home how much detail in the world we miss, and this, I believe, is one of the foremost reasons why I have come to enjoy photography so much!
