Mormon Tabernacle Choir marks 80th broadcast year
(AP) – Jul 20, 2009
SALT LAKE CITY — The renowned Mormon Tabernacle Choir has marked a broadcasting milestone — 80 straight years of music and religious messages on radio and television.
The Emmy Award-winning choir's landmark broadcast of its weekly program, "Music and the Spoken Word," was Sunday.
The program is the longest-running, continuous broadcast in America. It is carried by more than 2,000 radio and television stations and cable systems.
A ceremony with remarks from Thomas S. Monson, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, was held to mark the occasion.
The program was first broadcast by radio from the Salt Lake City Tabernacle on July 15, 1929.
The 360-member choir was formed in 1847 as Latter-day Saints trekked across the plains to settle Utah.
