Born in Portsmouth, Hampshire (England) in 1964. A slim, fit, successful and good-looking liar.
More than anything, I like to try to capture a scene, a setting, an object in a way that may not have been achieved before. Very little is new in photography, but it is nice to try to look at things from a novel angle.
Light is such a major influence on photography, none of us can hope to completely control it, but I love to try to work with it and coax it to work in my favour where at all possible..

~ Lately I’ve been struck with how I really love what you can’t see in a photograph. An actual physical darkness. And it’s very thrilling for me to see darkness again. - Diane Arbus.

What draws me to Steve's photos is their deceiving simplicity. His mastery of light and shadow turns the mundane into the sublime. He's one of those rare photographers who has managed to create their own recognisable and original style. I love coming back to see what he's going to do next. Steve spreads his encouraging and constructive comments far and wide. Being at the receiving end of Steve's comments is like getting an unexpected visit from Santa Claus, or Robin Hood spreading wealth to the poor. But the one thing I haven't managed to digest is his pseudonym. For a monster, there's a lot of beauty in the beast!

Where there is desire, there is a way. When that desire is focused through a camera, stunning results can be had. These are the exact sentiments that I had when I first discovered Steve's photographs. Rarely have I been so captivated by such seemingly simple photography. However it is anything but simple – subtle complexity hides behind every angle, every bold composition, every colorful repetition, every haunting mystery. Steve presents us with his own interpretation of his world – an interpretation that requires us to experience that world completely. We never know what to expect, except the unexpected. I often find myself inspired by his talented use of tones and shadows, his timeless landscapes, his creative macros and textures, and his ability to extract something so human out of his portraits. A symphony for the eyes and an opus for the brain, this self-proclaimed Monster aspires to push his art further, and I have no fear that he will take it far.

I am just discovering Steve's stream since some days. There is a special tuch in it. Easy to say ? Ok, let us go on more deeply. But I must say that, for the moment, I didn't take a look at all his sets, but just the last photos. Especially landscapes. Skies and clouds are heavy, dark and surreal and trees are the only silent inhabitants of these locations. It's not gothic. We are entering Steve's landscapes as we are entering some cathedral: silence, perspective, food for thought. There is also a strong recurrent element : these landscapes seem to be out of Time, giving some feeling of eternity. Perhaps this is enhanced by the absence of any people. There are people in Steve's photos, but not in these special landscapes I am talking about. As i am movie's addict, I often use comparisons with movies I like (just to make balance with my unability to explain myself correctly). Many of Steve's shots remind me the work of Spielberg's director of photo, Janusz Kaminsky, especially the "precog flashes" in minority report. Anyway, and as i said, I have yet hundreds of photos to discover in his stream; so I should modify this testimonial in some time. It's a great work and I invite you to discover it.

Steve is one of the best photographers that you can meet on flickr. He has a talent for producing the most unusual of images; the variety of his photos is surely the mirror of an educated eye, to envisage the image in his mind’s eye before seeing the result. To visit the photostream of Steve is like simultaneously visiting the photostreams of ten different photographers, all great and having in common the attention to detail of the true artists (on the talent of Steve, to be honest, I'm ready to bet an arm, and even more).

He, Steve, is really a monster...a monster in photography! I really like his way to dominate the colour, to express in the photo an equilibrium that is not only aesthetic but a research and an expression of being. Steve, the monster, has also an impressive technique that shows in a particular way in his perfect macros. But the thing that I do appreciate more on hi photography is the stile: I look at his photo and I remind that "less is more", that the essential is on the little, the simple and that to add value sometimes you need to subtract. Good luck, wonderful monster! Thomas
