My photographic interests include astrophotography, landscapes, nightscapes, and the submarine world. In general, my approach to all kinds of photography is artistic and creative, not documentary. The camera represents reality no more or less than an artist in the studio. In the studio everything is on the table: compositing, free transforms, false color palettes, etc. However, many of my images are straight out of the camera, with only minor adjustments in post. By minor adjustments I mean a few curve transforms and a minor crop, if at all. My color aesthetic is excessively childlike; I sometimes fantasize living in a world oozing with intense, vibrant paint everywhere. Many marine creatures display intense color in the course of their natural behavior; dive lights and strobes enhance their color through photo-fluorescence. The color of sea creatures is often overwhelming which is a paradox for humans because we do not perceive this color naturally. Like the night sky, the submarine world is a nearly monochrome world with pastel shades at best. Many of my nebula images are recorded using narrow band filters for which the application of any color palette is legitimate. How can there be natural color when we perceive no color in the dark? The notion of natural color is a fantasy. I enjoy photographing subjects that are technically challenging, and tend to ignore subjects that present little challenge, or I find a way to make them challenging. I am currently based in Sydney, Australia.
