Is it necessary to use old cameras and traditional film - yunno, a kind of chemical gunk smeared on a plastic substrate, for those not familiar with the stuff - in order to be a real photographer? Of course not. But if you take a look at Minamitane's images, many of them taken with veritable antiques, you might very well think so. His is a very distinctive style, based on a happy coincidence of a unique approach to photography and a unique place. Well worth studying, whether you wield an ancient photographic apparatus or a modern digital Wurlitzer...

This man has to be one of my favorite photographers on Flickr. I don't know him, so I guess you could call this a secret crush....ha! But anyways, his photography is seriously amazing. His Mamiya shots blow my mind, they are THAT good. Which isn't to say his 35mm photography is bad. It's damn near genius. All of his photos have a certain feel to them, his own unique style. I feel like all of his photos are somehow related to each other. He is one of the few photographers on Flickr that has inspired me to get into film photography. I could only hope that I am one day HALF as good as Johnathan Hillhouse.

My man in Japan is a lovely bloke, a fellow Talis-whisperer and a blinding musician. I can't wait to visit him - I miss the good old days of rocking that scout hut to hell and back.
