Mimachan is someone.
Mimachan is no one.
Mimachan is your friend.
The stranger.
The other.
Yourself.
Australian born artist Prudence Groube’s world of MIMACHAN inhabits the space between the seen and unseen inviting the viewer to view through the candy colored lens of a pop culture drifter.
Prudence’s work is concerned with how language and personal iconography are influenced by urban spaces and the overstimulation inherent within them. As information, technology, and media connect people closer than ever, boundaries continuously dissolve, dismembering us from ourselves. MIMACHAN invites the viewer to question: In a world whose borders are dissolving how do we find meaning when we have no shape left?”
The world of Mimachan does not have to make sense. There is no earth, no sky, no boundaries. Understanding is experienced as a whole sensation. In this place a new language – a new way of being- becomes possible.”
Prudence’s work is in private collections both domestically and internationally. She has shown in Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Miami in both solo and group shows.
“I want to see Mimachan everything! Mimachan dolls, clothes, accessories. Mimachan is the Hello Kitty of my generation. It would be amazing, to see that dream come true. Besides, I can’t think of anything cooler than being big in Japan.”
Until that time, Prudence’s commitment to maintaining culture within civilization; coupled with her over-riding infatuation with cartoons; will continue to inform the aloof discourse of her works.
