Drag to set position!
Hello
Talking about ones self has always been difficult for me but I think it is important to share, so that you can get an idea of who is behind the scenes….so here goes!
I’m Adam and I am an artist, designer and craftsman.
I come from a small city in South Australia called Adelaide but now live in the big city of Tokyo, Japan.
Although my move to Japan was of coarse a conscience one, I feel it was an inevitable event in the path my life would take and was largely influenced by my childhood. My wonderful grandmother is Japanese.
When I was a boy I spent much of my time after school at my grandmothers house who taught me to create, sew and make things. So I have been making things ever since I can remember.
After dropping out of high school at the age of 15 and shortly after leaving home I decided to attend college to study fashion. But after two years of not fitting into fashion college I dropped out and I moved into theatre and the costume world. This turned out to be a good move and I graduated from theatre design in 2000 with both construction and design qualifications.
Prior to moving to Japan I was employed as a senior costume cutter at the South Australian State Theatre company, and leading up to that I had the privilege of being a professional costume cutter and maker both over seas and in Sydney, Australia for many years.
I have had the privilege of working on many big shows like The Lion King, Phantom of the Opera and Mamma Mia but have also worked on many smaller budget shows and films as well. While this seems like it would be an exciting and creative life it really boiled down to doing as your told, fulfilling a brief and hoping you get employed on the next job so you can keep paying the bills.
Then after almost 10 years of being to busy stuck in one warehouse or another working on films and theatre for 60, 70 or 80 hours a week or having no job at all (tired and with only your savings to live on stressing about when the next job would come up), I decided it wasn’t for me any more and quit my job… then on a bit of a whim I moved to Japan...
Currently I teach English; one of the few Jobs an Aussie can do here without Japanese language skills. While doing this I am experimenting with different options and looking for an area I am interested in and can use the skills I already have but in a more creative satisfying way.
My endeavour is to find some balance between my creative interests and life in general…giving me time to creative and express myself as well as have time to cultivate and maintain friendships, relationships and enjoy the sweet life we all have.
This came to mind as I was writing this If it is a quote from some you know of please let me know, otherwise I think I may have just had a moment of brilliance! Hehe!
“I believe that the world of creativity and making things is one of an eternal student and although you may master many things along the way you never stop learning”
