I remember 1869 fondly, the Suez Canal was opened to much fanfare, Ulysses Grant had taken office in the White House and chicken tasted so much better. The same could be said of 1869's photography, a fanfare of delight in every visual morsel. Both the mundane and the exotic get their fair share of exhibitionism.
