There is something unique about photography that makes it a wonderfully creative challenge. The view of things around us is influenced by more than just what we see through our eyes. It affected by the state of our surroundings (temperature, wind, sound, smells), but also by our current mood (including whether we are at work or at leisure, stressed or relaxed, the people we are with). A view may seem unexceptional one day, but captivating the next. Even the amount of motion affects our perception. A location looks different from a car, bicycle or when walking. Even standing still affects how we perceive what we see. These are only a few of the things that affect our visual perception.

To me, the main challenge in photography is to capture as much of the perception of a location in a motionless, two dimensional image. However, a parallel challenge that is equally compelling is to deliberately attempt to capture a view in a way that presents the location significantly different from the way it is percieved with our eyes. To make make an unexceptional view, interesting in a photograph.

This is photography to me.
