I have had 10 years experience in commercial photographic printing, but as a photographer, am purely a 'sometimes-hobbyist', usually taking documentary photographs of architecture and urban scenes. I am interested in the grittiness and darkness that lies beneath the surface of everday life - you know, that stuff we miss in our marketer-driven quest for constant happiness.... Taken to its extreme, I try to capture the beauty that is inherent in what lies beneath.
Most of my images are the result of a two month back-packing trip around Europe in 2003. Much of this trip was spent travelling behind what was formerly the iron curtain. Others were taken in relation to my Master's thesis, which focused on the work of Wellington architect W H Alington. There are still more from the time I spent living in London, and a (very) few from holidays here, when I can be bothered to dust off my camera (NZ is much less inspiring to my eye than Europe!).
As I have now filled this account to its maximum of 200 images, I have created a separate account for new work: Michael-D (new works)
I photograph on film with a Pentax MZ-6, Pentax K100d, and a range of vintage Pentax prime lenses.
I live in Lyall Bay, Wellington
