I put off leaving Mike a testimonial because it's hard to really put everything into words. He has a knack—that's an understatement—I don't know any better word for it. When I go out shooting with Mike I can see the most unique situations arise and then I almost understand. I consider myself privileged to have the oppo… Read more

I put off leaving Mike a testimonial because it's hard to really put everything into words. He has a knack—that's an understatement—I don't know any better word for it. When I go out shooting with Mike I can see the most unique situations arise and then I almost understand. I consider myself privileged to have the opportunity to both work around him and to see him to continue to grow.

I've only recently become aware of Michael's photos, but they are now one of my most frequently visited streams - take the time to browse and you'll see why. The dude is good, real good.

I really don't know what to say or write in a testimonial and they all end up sounding corny and false, but i have something to say about Michael's work. His street and portrait photography has a rare formal power, i like the energy of his shots that is irresistible and has a great psychological intimacy. Michael draws us into empathizing with his subjects, in poses that are spontaneously informal, with a lightness of touch and a wry observational humour. Jim Morrison once sang, "people are strange," important street photography is about teaching us to see with fresh perceptions, to make new the strangeness of contemporary life, Michael is a unique talent and his slice of life photos achieve an iconic status, now wheres my invite to that party?

From the first time I crossed cyber-paths with Still Vision, Michael's wry wit (obvious in both words & visuals), kindness, special talents, style & humility struck me as unique. Most people here in the street-photography world fall into one of two camps: they are drawn towards people or things. Michael quietly (up 'til now) simply goes about his business posting his indescribable photographs of candid people in the street, the things they've abandoned, and the tell-tale signs of the way we live. He doesn't think one type of photo is necessarily better than the other. His only preference is that of keeping an eye on incredible quality. His informal portraiture is sublime and truly inspirational. Some of my favorite times on flickr are spent gawking at his photos and reading his comments. He's a thinking photographer who also has a good grounding in historical perspective. You'll also likely note, as I have, that he & his Still Vision has been able to coerce many people (both his wide circle of friends & even complete strangers) to remain open & honest & genuine (let alone funny) in front of his lens. That's likely made easier because that's exactly what he is being & doing behind the viewfinder. He's as coolly flexible as a world-class gymnast.
