Merrill Pungarte Bray is an Aboriginal artist of the Eastern and Northern Arunda group from Alice Springs. Merrill is from the Pungarte skin group, which is one of eight. She was born in 1958 and has been painting since the age of twelve. Her Great Grandmother A'raka (meaning sun) is the Sundreaming Woman from the Northern Arunda side of Alice Springs, at Illbarlinja. Like her Mother and Grandmother before her, Merrill belongs to the Ayeparenye Dreaming (Caterpillar Dreaming).
Merrill is a painter who creates new dimensions of space and uses colour to capture movement. Her aesthetic is a unique form of creative expression. The beautiful vibrant abstracts reflect her fascination with all things in nature: from DNA to outer space and back to sub-atomic particles.
Her 'Micro' works express and touch on the essence of spirit, exploring string theory vibrations, DNA. water crystals and the bringing into existence of intentions, through the process of positive thinking. Her Macro works depict universes filled with nebulous galaxies and clusters of stars.
Her works also reflect her love of Country, featuring seasonal changes in nature, stories of Mother Earth and of her Great Grandmother's Sundreaming experiences.
