2011 marks the centenary of Marshall McLuhan’s birth. Worldwide, a tremendous range of activities are being planned to celebrate and honour the man and his ideas. With Toronto about to be under the focus of international gaze, Toronto’s McLuhan Program in Culture & Technology joined forces with The City of Toronto’s Economic Development and Culture Division and Mozilla in July 2010 to claim McLuhan, his theories and his role in the emergence of our great international metropolis. This collective then began collaborating with “McLuhan in Europe 2011″, the Estate of McLuhan, and Canadian Embassies worldwide, to build our local and global strategy for McLuhan100. Next, McLuhan100 reached out to all four Toronto universities who – for the first time ever in Toronto – have agreed to collaborate on the McLuhan100 in order to ensure a whole new generation of young scholars is aware of and able to contribute to McLuhan and his legacy (now and next). Cultural organizations across the city have joined with McLuhan100 to integrate McLuhan-esque programming help highlight and celebrate this global icon.
