Maya Portrait Project website

The Maya Portrait Project was founded in 2010 with the goal of establishing a database of images and an analytical framework for understanding representations of named rulers at the site ancient Maya site, Palenque. This site Palenque is particularly useful to use as a case study because of the large number of portraits that were carved, modeled, or painted on monumental architecture there. Furthermore, because of advancements in our understanding of the ancient Maya language, it has been possible to translate a substantial number of hieroglyphic inscriptions from Palenque. Such information has allowed us to see the site as richly. The visual and textual richness of Palenque’s preserved material culture makes it especially suitable to support a number of different kinds of investigations.
