I'm challenged by the experience of standing in front of a well exposed, well printed photo, taken by some one more talented - it will always inspire me to do better.

I use digital - but in my hands it lacks the discipline and craft, compared to working with film and paper.

I'm so glad I learnt on an old TTL Rollie, 'graduating' to a Nikon FM2 when I'd saved enough money. Since then I have moved into 4x5. I currently experience the highs and lows of being a beginner photographer all over again. I still marvel at the magic of seeing blank plastic and paper transform into the image I planned when I pressed the shutter.

The single most significant moment in my photographic journey would be, when I was taken to a Diane Arbus exhibit as a 13 year old by my high school art teacher. He was a brilliant artist and teacher. Many of his students have gone on to excell in fine arts. I still have the images of the exhibition in my minds-eye. Diane Arbus's work is wonderfully sensitive, challenging and respectful represenations of people at the margins of society- something a priviledged 13 year old needed to be mindful of. I disovered small parts of me in her photos. That for me is the power of sucessful photography, - the transformative experience of viewing.
