Matthew Saxon
Drag to set position!
Hi my name is Matt Saxon, the albums that I have created in my profile represent my work as a concept artist and set designer on films such as The Matrix trilogy, Scooby Doo, Stealth, The Fountain and Star Wars. And as a designer of experiential environments such as museums exhibitions, motor shows and retail spaces over the past 18 years.
A little bit about how the images in these albums were produced.
As a concept artist my role is to generate and develop illustrations and artwork under direction of the production designer on a film, these pieces can range from a simple hand sketch to thumbnail ideas for a prop to a digital production painting developing the mood and lighting of a particular shot or scene.
These can be produced in a variety of ways - for concept development over the years my marker pen drawings have given way to drawing packages such as Sketchbook Pro. While for more developed pieces I will usually take a hand drawn perspective or a 3d model and build up textures, lighting and mood using Photoshop, using custom brushes, layer effects and edited sections of textures and photos.
As an experiential designer it is usually necessary to respond to a client brief and to evaluate many internal and external factors as part of this response.
So for the initial stages of a project while exploring the brief and possible design directions and solutions, I like to work in Sketchbook Pro to create fairly developed sketches to show the design intent. These will then generally be worked up into 3D designs, produced in Vectorworks, which allows me to model up a design in 3 dimensions and then use this model to generate finished presentation visuals either with the built in Renderworks capability or in Cinema 4d, as well as drawings and documentation for specification and construction.
I hope you have as much fun looking through these images as I have had working on the fantastic projects that generated them.
