A native to Jessup, Maryland Daniel Johnson moved to Richmond to attend school at Virginia Commonwealth University where he will graduate with a BFA in Crafts & Material Studies in 2009. Since he was very young, Daniel has felt compelled to create as a means of analyzing and understanding the world around him. His evaluations are abstractly expressed through painting, sculpture, and furniture design.
Daniel’s work covers an ever-expanding list of mediums from spray paint to caste bronze, utilizing a variety of techniques including stenciling, projection, casting, welding and woodworking. His artwork is largely influenced by graffiti, pop culture, and by artists therein such as Blaine Fontana, Sam Flores, and Banksy.
An inquisitive observer in life, Daniel’s art reflects a struggle to gain perspective on matters of spirituality, political ideology, and social values. Less of a testimonial than an exploration, his newest work deals with individuality and examining the substance of friendship.
