Spicuzza, a writer, journalist and documentary filmmaker, has been honored with awards from Investigative Reporters & Editors, The Overseas Press Club, the Florida Press Club, the Society of Professional Journalists, the Press Club of the East Bay, Peninsula Press Club and the Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowship. Spicuzza's story “Enter the Dragon Head” was awarded a Prevention for a Safer Society (PASS) Award from the National Council on Crime and Delinquency.

 

Mary Spicuzza traveled throughout Sicily and mainland Italy to report on attempts to build the world’s longest suspension bridge for Frontline/World, and was named a Livingston Awards for Young Journalists finalist for that project.

 

Matias, a documentary film about a Mexican migrant who died trying to cross the U.S.-Mexico border produced by Mary Spicuzza and Claudine LoMonaco, was screened at various film festivals, including Palm Springs International ShortFest, Sonoma Valley Film Festival, Arpa International Film Festival, San Diego Latino Film Festival and Cleveland International Film Festival. A version of it aired on PBS Frontline/World as "A Death in the Desert."
