I'm a photographer based in Tokyo, Japan. I focus mainly on nature and wildlife, but I also have a passion for portraiture that I'm working on more now that I'm in this full time.

Much of my photography is shot with the lens' aperture wide open, or close to it. To me the out of focus 'bokeh' areas of a photograph are equally if not more important than the main subject.

All of my images are copyrighted, and may not be used without permission. Please contact me to request a quote for any kind of commercial or personal use, or see if the images are in my Photoshelter store for instant licensing and download. If you can't find the image, just drop me a line and I'll work with you to get you what you want.

You can buy original fine art prints of my images on my Web site or Fine Art Folio collections from my Folios Web site.

I run photography workshops in Japan, right now concentrating mainly on my "Winter Wonderland Workshop" in Hokkaido, the north island of Japan, arguably the most beautiful place on earth. For details see my Workshops Web site at www.mbpworkshops.com.

I also do a popular weekly Photography Podcast that you can download from my Web site or subscribe to in iTunes, and have over 210 Episodes in the archives as of October 2009. I discuss both the technical and artistic sides of photography, often backup up by my own photography. I've now got a blog too, which is becoming a hub for many of my photography related activities. There is also a thriving Photography Forum, where photographers of all levels discuss all aspects of photography in a friendly environment. All can be found at my Web site.

I'm also pretty active on Twitter, so follow me if you are interested. Scott Bourne say's I'm one of the Top 10 Photography-related People on Twitter.

I shoot with the Canon gear listed in my profile on my own Web site. The listed gear is linked to images in my gallery that were shot with that particular camera or lens.

Martin is an inspirational photographer, he has had a big impact on my photography. He is one of the very few internationally renowned photographers who takes the time to communicate personally with his photographic and listening audience around the world. His work with nature and his ability to make his art work pop by his use of composition and narrow dept of field is simply stunning, but don't take my word for it, check it out for yourself. Martin's ability to explain in detail his technique is what I personally think makes him stand out from the others, he appears to be an all round nice guy. When I listen to his podcast's I always feel as if Ive just sat down in a Japanese tea house with him and taken in every word hes spoken. Keep up the excellent work mate, your an inspiration. Most people acquainted with Martin know him as a nature photographer bar none, a fearless and peerless gaijin cameraman who tirelessly traverses the vast Japanese wilderness of Tokyo and beyond in search of the perfect shot with his unfailiing tack-sharp focus, brilliant compo, and stunning DOF. What they don't know, however, is that he has another passion--assuming the role of an industrial Guinness taster, responsible for sampling all of the finest draughts on tap in the Big Mikan. As to which one he's better at--well, I'd say they're pretty equally matched! My glass is raised you to you, Martin--kanpai!!! ;-)

Martin is one of the greatest photographers I know. I began following his podcast and web community a few years ago and it has greatly influenced my photography. He has been very helpful with assisting me in understanding many of the more technical aspects of photography. There are decisions that I have made that have brought my photography to another level because of his input. He goes for the best and does not settle. In addition he has some amazing work, a really beautiful and artistic eye and a wonderful sense of direction in his photography. It is good meet a person who is so passionate about his photography. That's the kind of people I want to populate my world.

Being a fellow "Gaijin" here in Japan its great to see a different prospective on this strange but beautiful land. I hope to one day have the chance to go on one of Martins Hokkaido workshops and be able to see how he works in the field. On top of this Martin is just a really great guy. Martin's work is fabulous - a true bokeh artist. The way he uses depth of field is splendid and inspiring. His passion shows through in everything he does; from his podcast to his photography to his web sites. I have known Martin for several years now and consider him a true friend and a consummate professional. There is only one thing missing to-date...meeting face to face. That will happen! Go listen to his podcast, check out his photography forum, review his work, buy a print or license some images, attend a workshop...you won't be disappointed!
