I started uploading my photos onto Flickr so that I could share them with a wider group of people. I took some fine art photography courses in College, which I found to be quite enlightening. At that time, I had what I thought was a great print, which I thought would be widely liked by the instructor and the class. The instructor's only comment was, "look, this is a technically perfect photograph that says absolutely nothing." From that point on, I realized that, at least to me, a good photograph captures an emotional response in the viewer. Not many of my photographs rise to this level, but I hope that some of them do. If you would like to use any of these photographs, please contact me for a license.
My other passion, other than photography, is the practice of law. I find a strong link between photography and certain aspects of law. Nowhere is this more evident than with trial law. Successful trial lawyers must be technically sound, and good story tellers. In trial, you have a short period of time to tell your story, and the technical aspects (evidence, procedure, etc.) are secondary to the overall story that needs to be told. If you do not know the technical part, you will not get past the first hour of a trial. But, many technically competent lawyers, are highly ineffective. The same applies to photography. You need to be technically competent, but story telling is far more important than camera type, f-stops, and shutter speeds.
At the end of the day, I am a much better lawyer than I am photographer. Nonetheless, I keep trying.
