I am a fine art and natural history photographer based out of Kalamazoo, Michigan. My current work centers on black and white landscapes made with medium format film, but I also engage in focus stacked macro, botanical, digital infrared work and photo montages. I have been a long time member of a local artist cooperative and enjoy discussing art with people working in a variety of media beyond photography.
I enjoy both digital and film photography and use the process that yields the best result for the subject at hand. For me that is medium format film, mostly black and white, for landscapes and digital for close ups, macros, and most color work. That said, working with film is, for me, a much more enjoyable experience as it requires the photographer to slow down, pay attention to details, and try to fully visualize what the final image will be. For me, the concentration and care required in all steps of working with film creates a more centered and fulfilling experience. My use of film is purely a hybrid experience as my film exposures are scanned, processed, and printed digitally.
My work appears in group shows fairly often and also the occasional solo exhibits. My snowflake photos are featured in "The Story of Snow: The Science of Winter’s Wonder," a children's science book published in 2009 (paperback edition in 2017.) Written by myself and physicist John Nelson, "The Story of Snow" was named an Outstanding Science Trade Book by National Science Teachers Association, received a Blue Ribbon award from the Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books, won an American Meteorological Society Louis J. Battan Author's Award, and several other recognitions. It has been translated into four languages.
