Assembled by Dominican composer/arranger Eddi González, 1 Mamajuana from Santiago de los Caballeros. Mamajuana (name of an exotic and aphrodisiac beverage) combines Afro-Caribbean and contemporary rhythms with romantic lyrics. Their self-titled debut album, released by Sony International, featured the hit singles "Mamasota" and "Sin Un Beso Suyo." After two weeks in the U.S. market, Mamajuana sold 20,000 copies. In 2002 Mamajuana was nominated for best tropical band at Premios Lo Nuestro (Univision), Best New Dominican artist at Premios Casandra and Pre-nominated for the Grammy Awards 2004 as best Urban Album.
