Maki Creations are beautiful, handmade, baby-alpaca apparel and accessories. We make baby sweaters, baby blankets, stuffed animals, scarves, purses and shawls.
Most of Maki's creations are made by women residing in prison in Ayacucho, Peru. Almost all of these women have been charged with drug trafficking. Their sentences are harsh; many of them are serving 15-20 years. They often come from impoverished homes and are sought out by drug cartels to transport cocaine produced nearby in the jungle. If the women have children, they are allowed to keep them in the prison until the child is four years old.
Maki seeks to help these women and children by providing income from a legitimate form of work while inside the prison and eventually upon their release.
While the women are paid individually for their work, additional profits are used for improving their living conditions and providing classes on a wide variety of relevant topics.
