Magnus takes its name from the Latin word for "great" but also stands as a historical nod to the gay German human rights activist and pioneer in the field of sexual research Dr. Magnus Hirschfeld. We therefore aspire to greatness through books that challenge, engage, and entertain readers in the areas of gender and sexuality.

This is an especially exciting time in LGBT publishing. The literature is more varied and mainstream than ever before with more outlets to reach gay consumers, more publishing formats at hand, and more public awareness and support around LGBT issues. About Don Weise:

Magnus Books publisher Don Weise has 18 years publishing experience, the majority of which has been devoted to LGBT literature. He's served as Publisher of Alyson Books and Senior Editor at Carroll & Graf Publishers.

Among the many authors he's worked with are Gore Vidal, Edmund White, John Rechy, James Purdy, Ann Bannon, Edward Albee, Samuel R. Delany, Leslie Feinberg, Christopher Bram, Marijane Meaker, Dennis Cooper, and Kate Clinton.

He was named by Publishers Weekly as an industry "Change Maker" and listed among Out Magazine's "100 Most Intriguing Gay Men and Lesbians" of the year.

Don also sits on the board of the Lambda Literary Foundation.
