The ships arrived as spring was closing and another hot summer approaced. There would be work to do after much froliking during the cool months. It was a hard time marked by sweat upon mostly naked skin from the heaving, the pulling, the general nonsense that was no more understood than a gnat circus. One only needed to heed the cool shade, a chance to laze whilst others toiled, to break the cycle of cursing under breath and understand that indeed the whole land was not a burning furnace. The land was beautiful and full; grasses, trees, flowers of variety and fragrences unknown. Who knew this other world existed only a few steps away, seen from another angle sitting upon posterior. Sit, watch, and breath. The people did not know this. Every season had its own toil, labor both physically and mentally. From the outside they all looked crazy, analagous to the ant who worked all summer gathering food for the long winter. Except here there was no long winter, in fact it was quite short, but even if it were long they'd keep on working without much notice. A heavier coat, sturdier shoes, the sniffles, that is about the only difference to them in winter. Work was always to be done. Sure, they froliked in the spring, but you don't understand this froliking. It was work. It was real hard work.
