I believe there is beauty in everything

If you can't see it, you are not looking closely enough

The Personal

My name on Flickr is lordtyler. I choose it because I liked the Tyler characters in Fight Club (movie), Heavy Metal 2000 (movie) and Heavy Metal F.A.K.K. 2 (game). I am in my thirties and live in Austria with my wife and many cats.

I like to think of my photos as pieces of art. Every single one has to tell it's own story using it's own way. And every one of it needs it's place in the spotlight - that's why I have come to the decision to post only one photo a day.

It seems it's common belief that as a photographer you have to find your style and specialise. I like to refuse to comply. I've seen the work of dozens of "professional" photographers work - while some keep a nice variety in their work, there are enough of them who have manoeuvred themselves into corners they seemingly can't or don't want to escape out. Sure, the quality they are delivering is high but they are basically just pressing any picture in a very narrow corset. I 'd like to ask them a few questions: Is this all you are capable of? Is this you - all you are - all you want to be - all you desire? When did you stop loving photography and made it just a job?

So I am trying to find the best style to for each photo individually. Sometimes it works best to use vivid colors. Sometimes a photo that looks almost boring becomes phantastic when presented in black & white. Sometimes huge contrast do wonders while at other times diffuse lighting and similar, matching tones make the image stand out. Sometimes things have to be left out to show the advantage of what's remaining. My current style is my attempt at not having a style - although I have to admit that there's a tendency towards dark, even underexposed photos and detail shots - I guess I am feeling uneasy if the weight of the histogram lies in the right half ;-)

The Seasons

I am going to publish my photos in seasons - similar to a TV series - meaning there will be a period of 100 days where I will post a photo every day, followed by a recreation phase where I shot new photos, think about new possibilities, find new locations and search for new inspirations, insights and techniques.

The first season lasted from August 27th till November 14th 2015 (not 100 days because I posted a bunch of photos when first joining flickr).

The second season hasn't started yet. There will be an announcement-image a few days before the actual start of the season.

The Technicality

In 2006 I got hold on my first digital camera, a Sony DSC-P200 compact camera. It was very cool to have photos digitally without the need for developing and scanning them first. The restrictions of the camera were not so cool. There was only JPEG and even in "Manual" mode anything that could be changed was the ISO value (100, 200 or 400). I wanted an upgrade that allowed me more control and a better picture quality but for a long time this meant going the way of expensive and heavy DSLRs. Time went by and the camera landscape changed. Superzooms, micro four thirds and system cams became available. In August 2015 I bought a Samsung NX500 because it was the compromise I was looking for all the years - good quality, versatility, not too expensive and still easily transportable.
