I am a photographer who as been working freelance since 1990. I have a long track record of cross art form collaboration and innovative community projects. I have been working as a photo artist, documentary and publicity photographer and a designer with a wide variety of people and organizations. Work includes projects with the community and education departments of Opera North, The National Media Museum, ArtForms/Education Leeds, Creative Partnerships, The Irene Taylor Trust Music in Prisons Project and Heads Together Productions.
The two key strands to my work are photographing people and spaces. I have developed a style of portrait photography over the years, which I use to develop self-esteem and promote positive images of the people I work with. This can range from children in schools, to specific groups from many and varied backgrounds.
I have also extensively work photographing spaces and what they say about the people who inhabit them, working in a way that makes the space speak with care and sensitivity.
I work with people of all ages to develop their camera and ‘looking’ skills on projects to record their spaces, be that school, home or community.
I am artist that enjoys both the process and the product of what I do and have been involved in creating exhibitions, resource packs, projections and DVDs that have been shown in a wide variety of places from HMP Holloway to the Southbank in London.
Due to the sensitive nature of some of the groups I work with not all of it can be put up on my Flickr site.
My current work is recording my love of light, colour, spaces and people that I see everyday.
I enjoy photographing beauty in ordinaryness, finding colour, shapes, angles and spaces...
I also Tweet pictures as Betty Lawless.
Betty Lawless is my alter ego. Betty has been an avid daily Tweeter and Instagram addict for over a year. Betty loves photographing the beauty in ordinary things, revels in colour and light and is partial to a little glitter, with a kitsch or vintage twist. Last year Betty's Visual Tweats Calender was a sell out. She is in the process of collecting pictures for the 2013 version.
