time flies. 2023 now. i've decided not to renew my pro account next year. i like the power and convenience of processing and posting photographs from my laptop. i've enjoyed using the web version of flickr since i joined in 2010. but flickr seems to have lost interest in its original platform and those of us who live and work here. the website is less usable (flickr priority, it seems), less flexible (another flickr priority, it seems), and operators / developers at flickr seem uninterested in supporting functionality that can be used to create tailored workflows for posting, editing, viewing, commenting, etc. i'm not sure what the strategy behind these decisions might be, but whatever flickr's strategy is doesn't appear to have anything to do with my needs or my enjoyment of the site. i've grown tired of paying for a quality of service i no longer receive. there are no great alternatives to flickr, and i do feel a part of a small community here (as do many others, i'm certain), so i intend to stay connected. it's sad in some ways, discouraging, but i have been looking for more time to write and pursue other creative outlets, so there is a silver lining. still ...

it's 2019 now. probably overdue for a profile update. i've never been able to express very clearly my purpose in making photographs, in pursuing art. i suppose this has something to do with my own difficulty in understanding my most basic motivation: my hunger to make some sense of the world around me. much of my work deals with emptiness, with loneliness, with shadow. much of my work is intended to make room for others, to create a habitable place, a place that is both strange and familiar. sometimes i look for grand scale in the tiny details, and sometimes i look for precisely the opposite. both perspectives co-exist. so this becomes a theme, unspoken, for me. the light and the dark. the great and the small. the yin and the yang. beauty. ugliness. connection. separation. all that. as clearly as i can make it. i suppose.

i have been at the business of making art, in a reasonably serious way, for a long time. photography is not my one and only passion, though i love everything about making images. i write. i make music. i like to make things.
i've gradually settled into a local neighborhood here on flickr. i have met many like-minded artists, photographers and writers here, and i am happy to call this little corner of flickrland home. it expands little by little, and i like the pace.
i have tremendous respect for artists and their work, and i hope you do, too. if you see something you like here, and would like to make a copy, please don't do it without asking me first. this extends to writing as well as photographs.
addendum to copyright statement - 22 dicembre 2018 - i have updated my profile settings to prohibit sharing my posts on other sites or through other means. i thought the statement above, expressing my desire that no one should re-use or re-post my work without my explicit permission, was very clear. apparently this is not the case. as i've said, i respect the creative work of other artists, and i expect to be treated with similar respect. this applies to both images and writing that i create and share in this space. please please respect this request; it is not that difficult to drop me a note requesting permission. this may seem like a trivial matter to many people who use this site and others like it. i assure you that it is most certainly NOT a trivial matter to me. thank you, in advance, for placing a high value on the work of artists who choose to share their work in this very open format.
i grew up in the american deep south, on the coast of south carolina. i love salt marsh, the ocean and the smell of pluff mud. i have also discovered that i have an inexplicably deep connection to italia. i have visited there many times and am drawn to the val d'orcia, to lucca, and to venezia. i'm happiest when i am in one of these places.
