I had it in my hands, my Canon Rebel T3i. I had gotten my first SLR back in high school in the late 80s. After more than a decade the batting around the diaphragm had disintegrated and I dreamed of buying myself a DSLR. Finally here is was. So I started snapping. But I was discouraged. My photos weren't turning out to be the stunners I was expecting. What did I have in my hands? Was it just an entry level camera with a kit lens? Was that the problem? After my initial euphoria I began to lament what I didn't have. But like God asked Moses, “What do you have in your hand?” I needed to use what I had.
I found photos taken by photographers with their Canon Rebel T3ies. These were excellent photos. With renewed ambition I used what I had rather than lamenting what I didn't have. I had in my hand a sophisticated Capturer of Light. Light is the essence of photography; light in all of its glorious permutations. Light has been eternal with God. Light is TIMELESS. The question has echoed down through the centuries, “What do you have in your hands?” And I answered, “A Canon Rebel T3i. Still with the kit lens I might add.”
