I’ve been asking myself a lot lately, as I slip past the one-month point of my daily asana photo project— the challenge of which is to practice each day in a different place— why I would undertake such a thing.

I think I started it because I wanted to get out of the house— out of the studio, of course, and out of my own backyard.

I am starting to realize, more and more, the meaning that it is taking on, which is the same intention I set for my practice each day, and the intention I will set as a teacher of yoga:

YOGA IS ART, NOT EXERCISE.

it is a dance.

it is a poem, and a love song.

it should make your heart laugh, your blood sing, and your body break into the spirit of joy that lies at the center of our being from birth, and before birth, and after death.

anything less will not bring me to the mat.

I know I’m not the most skilled with a camera, I don’t have any fancy lenses or equipment, and I wouldn’t call myself a ‘photographer’, but I believe— I know, from direct experience— that as human animals we are all born artists. we are all participant in the great cosmic dance, the lila of life, and we exist only (only!) to express this, because we are only (only!) expressions of this.

I don’t know how long I’ll keep the project going; originally my goal was 108 days, but I’m already a third of the way through that and I don’t want it to end so soon! it will evolve organically, as all the sweetest things do— no rules, no pressure, just love for the practice.

jai ma!
