I was waiting in line to buy a box of Rice Krispie treats. I was irritated, annoyed, even furious at the line of people ahead of me. People were shoving, pushing, groaning, moaning, and the cacophony of sounds clashed in my ears. I nearly screamed in frustration; I fingered the money in my pocket. I wanted to get out of here. ...You know that feeling you get when you think someone is staring at you? That creepy sensation that crawls under your skin? I was suddenly struck with this emotion, and I turned tentatively to see a wide-eyed, black-haired girl. Her eyes were fixed on me. She was dressed in a frilly pink dress, one of those princess dresses you would find in an old Disney movie. Her skin was clean, her teeth were slightly crooked, but in a likeable way. I wasn't in the mood for this. I gave her a dirty look, hoping she would stop and pull away. But she didn't. "What do you want?" I snapped, angrily, folding my arms across my chest. "Nothing." She bounced on her toes, a smile on her face. "What's your name?" I considered telling the store to make a public announcement because some girl had obviously gotten lost. Sure, she was taller and she looked older than me, but she obviously lacked the maturity to be in this crowded area by herself. "Pam." "Well Pam-" She cut me off. "Here. Call me if you ever need help." She handed me a slip of paper, and walked off. I shook thoughts of her from my mind, trying to convince myself I had been dreaming. I paid for the Rice Krispies and walked home. A few months passed by or so, and I was exhausted. I was cleaning out my purse, when I happened upon a piece of paper with a phone number scrawled on it. And I remembered. My heart pounding, I dialed the number in on my phone. Butterflies fluttered in my stomach, and I waited for a reply. There was an answer. "Hi." "Hi," I replied. "What are you looking for?" "Reason," I whispered. Why on earth was I calling a complete stranger? My finger trembled on the red phone to hang up. "Go find yourself," came the happy reply. "I'll help you." "What?" But she had hung up. Desperation caught in my throat; I walked back to the original supermarket and she was there. "Here." She thrust a yellow dress at me, one similar to the pink one she was wearing. It was the same pink dress I had first seen her in. "What is this for?" "Put it on." "Why?" "Trust me." Having no reason to disagree, I pulled the dress on on top of my other clothes. It had started to rain; the water fell in droplets from the sky. She looked up, her eyes gleaming with content. She stepped into the rain, holding out a hand for me. I ignored the warnings in my head, and took it. We walked into the rain, onto the wet concrete. The rain fell heavy on us, weighing down our souls, cleaning our existences. The water soaked us, deciding who we were. And we danced in the middle of forming puddles, in frilly dresses. We were princesses, and nobody existed in the world, except for us. And we found ourselves.
