Three years on from my last mid-covid update and the world and my own photography have moved on. An update is certainly in order as my interests have very much changed. I still shoot digitally on my mirrorless cameras, using both vintage and modern lenses, but in the 3 years since the last update I have started to shoot film and have become heavily invested in the process. These days I'll more often than not pick up a film camera, either 35mm or medium format, and leave the digital gear at home. It seems I'm not the only one as analogue photography is making a comeback everywhere I look. Why you may ask - the image quality is not as good as digital, the process is so much more difficult than digital, and perhaps what really stops people shooting film most, it is incredibly expensive. There are ways to mitigate the cost (develop and scan at home for example) but there's no way of getting round the fact that it is not an economical way to produce images. And yet we do it. And those of us that do shoot film will never be able to fully justify it to someone that doesn't. But that's where I'm at right now. Perhaps in 3 years I will have sold all my analogue gear and gone back to digital, who knows. Right now I'm happy mixing the two and seeing what comes of it.

I thought I should add an update as much has changed in this covid era for myself and my photography. I still love to shoot urban subjects and do so whenever I can but the covid enforced lockdowns here in the UK meant that my usual haunts in the city of London were off limits for long periods of time. Two things have surfaced as a result. One was that I found I really started to love woodland photography. To me it is much like architectural photography in that the search for composition is an all consuming activity and takes me out of myself completely, a kind of walking/seeing meditation that only photographers will truly understand. The second thing that has changed is that I have been captured by the charms of vintage lenses and in the past year I have acquired a collection that is already waaaaaaaaayyyyy too numerous. It's been a joyous experience for me, discovering the delight of manual lenses for the first time and seeing the wonders they are capable of.
** -------------------- **
I am very much drawn to architecture, urban landscapes, and street photography. Occasionally I will dabble in other styles but I've got a lot to learn when it comes to landscapes, portraits, macro, and wildlife/sport. It's a steep learning curve and I'm learning as I bumble along. I'm not a 'straight out of the camera' photographer. All of the photos I publish have been worked on in Lightroom to make them as good as I can make them. I am interested in the aesthetics of the finished image, how I get to that aesthetic will vary from image to image.
I love looking at other people's photos and like to leave faves and comments. I believe that Flickr should be a support network for photographers. There are very few Cartier-Bressons out there but let's face it we are all here because we love photography so why not spread the love a little.
I would respectfully ask that anyone interested in using one of my photos contact me before doing so. Unless you are using it for commercial purposes I'm nearly always going to say yes, but please, do me the courtesy of asking first.
