About the artist...

Lance Rubin’s creative impulse was set ablaze while attending the University of Georgia after meeting Michael Stipe of R.E.M., and has been burning brightly ever since. Michael, Lance and a group of other Athens, Georgia friends, musicians and artists discovered the Reverend Howard Finster on the way to a swimming lake, on the side of a small Georgia highway where his yard was filled with handmade naive folk art windmills. Trips to Finster’s art compound became a ritual until R.E.M. got signed to a major recording label, and Howard was noticed by the art community at large. The influence of this artistic friendship with Finster and Stipe was powerfully persuasive to Lance, and eventually he decided to return to Savannah to attend the Savannah College of Art and Design.

Lance holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Savannah College of Art and Design where he graduated in 1985. As she handed Lance his diploma, the dean of the school, Paula Rowan commented, “Lance, you’re a Spirit on Fire” and he has never forgotten this remark, and has used it as a benchmark for artistic success. Lance has been a photographer, a tattoo artist (Founded Venus Modern Body Arts in Manhattan's East Village in NYC in 1992 — the store still thrives there today), a set designer (and builder), carpenter, and graphic designer and art director for newsprint and advertising.

He has also studied art in Paris, New Orleans, San Francisco, Madrid, New York and Venice, and the year 2004 marks his return to painting. Lance has lived in the East Village in Manhattan (NYC) for the past 18 years, and has recently bought a home in New Jersey with a gigantic studio space which is filled with many paintings in several different styles, in various stages of completion.

His approach to marketing his art is unique. He started to auction his creations on Ebay to rave reviews. After a brainstorming session with friend R. P., it was determined that art parties (dinner parties with an art/collectors theme) would be a great way to introduce the paintings to an audience in a relaxed, celebratory environment allowing the patrons to experience the art while eating a delicious meal. R’s boundless enthusiasm and creativity have also fueled Lance’s passion. Lance is proud to contribute to the vibrant artistic community at boundlessgallery.com, and loves to ArtBlog at ArtSeen, and enjoys marketing his work through www.boundlessgallery.com/customer/mystore.php?artist_id=2500

Lance thrives on the support and enthusiasm of his wife, Jong.
