My work in fine art photography is an abstract reaction to reality which finds beauty in exploring details in macro and collaboration with whimsical personalities. My high school photo teacher, Jeff Martz, inspired me with his slide presentations on photographers like Joel Peter-Witkin, The Brothers Quay, and past Guggenheim fellowship recipients. These early impressions inspired me to push the concept of the camera as a domination to painting with light and to pursue the camera as an extension of fine art.
Starting with a 35mm film Nikon with a 50mm lens I jumped over a fence into a decaying resort in Marin county to shoot several pools half filled with rain water and collapsing locker rooms with over grown weeds and shrubbery over the grounds while evading personal injury climbing on fallen-in roofs. The anxiety from being caught trespassing was more frightening than getting hurt. I learned to be patiently still in an uncomfortable environment to get the desired compositions.
In SF State photo class we had a panoramic assignment, teaching us to stitch 3 or more photos together in Photo Merge. I chose to design my image in a wide angle perspective to represent how see the landscapes. Not owning a dslr yet I shot 42 images with a Canon PowerShot A520 4.0 megapixel. The final print came out 40x35 and the psd was over 1gb. This project pushed limitations of technology in 2008 and resulted in purchasing a Canon 40D for the next project.
Macro photography has remained my main interest in creating unique perspectives that push the imagination of the audience to see beyond reality and into abstract possibilities. The first lens I ever purchased was a Nikon Micro Nikkor 105mm f/2.8 to capture textures of solids and liquids. Still shooting on film I shot a small jar of milk in a glass container lit from beneath while sloshing the substance to capture motion. The final print has received comments believing it to be a Pear. Years later using DSLR I’ve been building a portfolio of color macro shots to bring out the full potential of small scale items that could be from beyond our universe.
My goal in photography is to bring people together through composition that speak to the individual but cannot be claimed to one culture. Everyone one is human, which is easily forgotten.
