I started using a point and shoot digital camera when I was pregnant with my daughter several years ago - the majority of my photos over the past two years have been of her (of course). I recently upgraded to a Canon Rebel XT with a 17-85mm lens and I love it! It's going to take some practice to get the hang of things, but I'm working on it daily (it's addictive, trying to figure out all the manual settings). I've even gone so far as to take photos of things OTHER than my two-year-old daughter. Still, they're mostly of her, as she is my favourite subject!
