I have pictures dating back 4 decades which I will start uploading soon.

 

When I was 11 years old I made two discoveries in a few months. First, my father had several cameras he brought back with him from Germany (World War Two). I asked him about them and he told me they were "broke", which was the term he used whenever he couldn't get something to work right. He said I could use them but I didn't know where to begin. A few months later I found boxes full of darkroom equipment and supplies in my grandmother's attic. They belonged to my uncle who said he forgot they were there and, yes, I could have them. There was a Kodak manual on how to develop film and I was off to the races. We had an unused bathroom in our basement which my parents allowed me to turn into a darkroom. My first roll of film was a disaster. I decided to use the method of development that used clips on both ends of the film which was then developed in trays by sliding the film back and forth.. I didn't realize that the temperature of the developer was critical. I had no way to time the development. The fixer was too weak. But by the third roll I'd worked out the kinks. I was very fortunate to discover that my next door neighbor was an advanced amateur photographer with a tremendous darkroom (I've never seen a nicer one than his). How I found this out is a whole story in itself. He taught me how to develop film in a tank and how to control the process. He also helped me to view my photographs as art and to compose and shot like every picture would hang on a wall. I srtil have a few of the pictures I took with his help.!

 

Flickr and HDR have given me new energy to go out and photograph the world. I've read the blogs and know how so many think of HDR as the death of photography but I disagree. For me it's been a rebirth.

 

I have 1000's of images from years of snapping (no wonder I have no feeling left in my right index finger!) and will start downloading the best of these soon.

Help me solve this photographic mystery.

 

I have just posted 44 pictures that I hope someone will help me identify. I found the negatives at a garage sale 15 years ago. Here is a link to the set:

The photos are magnificent, done by a talented photographer. Here’s a few:

 

 

 

I have found many clues to the identity which may help:

 

1. The negatives were in a box of darkroom items I bought in a garage sale in Aiken SC

 

2. There is a Delaware license plate seen on one of the cars and a billboard says”...ington, Del” presumably Wilmington Delaware.

 

3. The largest employer in Aiken at the time was DuPont (The Savanah River Plant). DuPont headquareters is in Wilmington. So it is likely that someone in the family worked for DuPont. Most of the people who came from Delaware to work here were upper level managers or engineers.

 

4. There is a photo of a car marked with “Skyline Drive, 10/18/1940”

 

5. The negatives are 2 1/2” by 3 1/2” size and seem to be CUT film, although they may have been ROLL film and cut after processing. The film was AGFA SUPREME PAN or AGFA SUPER PLENA.

 

6. The names “Ellie & Herb”, “Truner Construction Company”, “Sterling Auto Sales” and “Olivere” appear in some of the pictures.

This is an update on the photographic mystery I posted a few days ago.

A woman called who saw the article in the newspaper.

She said the man in the bottom picture was FRED ASTAIRE. At first I thought she was kookie but now I’m not sure and would like your help. She said that she was a lifelong resident of my town and that Fred Astaire made frequent visits here in the 1940’s.

 

There are at least 2 pictures of this man.

 

He does look a lot like Astaire from pictures of him from that time on the web.

I have uploaded some close ups of the same pictures.

Here are some differences I noted. My man has one bad front tooth and a point at the hairline on his forehead. I have not seen these in picture of Fred Astaire but those could have been doctored or his teeth might have been capped.
