Photographer’s Statement and Biography

My great passions in life are travel, photography and teaching. I believe that travel is an ideal way to broaden ones perspective on life and our place in the world. I have traveled to parts of all the continents but one and all the states but one. I believe that my travels have made me a better person. I have a more complete perspective on our existence. I have a better understanding of how all of us are connected.

I view photography as an extension of my view of the world. I attempt to document my experiences in the images I take. My emphasis is on scenic wonders of the world. The world abounds in wonders we can scarcely imagine. I attempt to bring that wonder home in my photographs and panoramas.

I enjoy sharing my experiences and images with others, particularly my students. I wish to instill in them the wonder I have for the world.

I have been interested in photography since my college days. I attended several rock festivals in the 60’s and 70’s and documented my experiences at them. When I became a teacher, I either sponsored a photography club or taught classes in photography. The emphasis was both on creativity and yearbook photography. I have had classes make pin-hole cameras and use them for basic photography.

I have taken a wide variety of photographs. I specialize in scenic and nature images. I have taken sports group photographs for schools and local groups. I enjoy taking candid photographs of young people at school or events. I have been the photographer at the North Carolina Association of Student Council’s Summer Workshops for 16 years. There I take hundreds of candids to be used in a slide show at the end of the workshop. In the past, I would spend the days taking images and the evenings processing the slides. Recently, I have moved to a digital only format.

I enjoy the challenge of a wide variety of photography, from groups, to event photography to travel photography.
