I lived and worked in London until I retired from teaching in 1993 and now live in Sussex. I've been taking photographs since the 1960s. I was interested then in medieval church frescoes and architecture; I also took a handful of nude studies of my beautiful girl friend and later wife. (I really regret that I didn't continue with this - I think the art nude at its best is a beautiful genre).
I continued taking photographs, but they were little more than record shots of the people and places in my life - I wanted something different from the stilted photos of my parents generation (I didn't know about Tony Ray Jones then!) but just didn't know how to go about it. I am now belatedly trying to improve my photography. I'm fairly eclectic, but mainly focus on Streetwork, the nude and landscape. I'm also scanning those few photos in the archives which I think might be worth reviving.
I belong to Lewes and Uckfield Camera Clubs which has put me in contact with some extremely talented photographers. Also, I'm seeing outstanding work by some brilliant photographers on Flickr - both of these influences have deepened my understanding of how to go about making, rather than just taking, a photograph. I know I'll never reach the summit, but as Richard Dawkins has said in referring to the process of evolution, in order to get to the top of 'Mount Impossible', you won't do it in a single bound, it can only happen in tiny steps. So my grateful thanks to so many of you who have helped me on my way.
PS May 2022 I am no longer active as a photographer - age has caught up with me at last. SoI am now concentrating on recording the changes in my garden, and with the restriction on the number of images we can hold on flickr, i have deleted all other images.
