I’m from the Gold Coast, Australia. I first picked up a DSLR camera in 2006 to create memories of my newborn puppies. One of my very first photos “Alaska” is featured in my fox terrier gallery.

I am inspired by the brilliant and yet often fleetingly beautiful moments that occur in nature. To find the soul of and the hidden gems of a location I don’t just like to photograph it but to also spend some time hiking. I’ll usually take just a long weekend away and visit 1 or 2 locations. The novelty of getting out of bed at 4am to greet a dull overcast day wears thin pretty fast for me on a longer trip. That said, to wake up to spectacular conditions is re-energising. The landscape photographs here on this site are from Australia and from New Zealand where I was born.

I take inspiration from the ability of a gifted photographer to transform the mundane into something really special. The challenge and joy of photography is that one never needs to stop improving. The most perfect light, atmosphere and colour are rare so much that capturing them becomes a much greater prize. It may be necessary to return to the same place again and again and again before making the picture in ones minds eye.

My love of animals is mirrored in my shots of wildlife and pets. I’m not a diehard wildlife photographer kitted out in camouflage gear complete with hide. That requires more patience than I have and a lens much heavier than I care to carry. I’ve learnt that the wildlife living very close to human activity lets you approach it much closer than you might expect. The highlight of one of trips to Cradle Mountain, Tasmania was a wild baby wombat climbing onto my lap while I was photographing it.

For my day job (actually I should say night job) I’m an emergency veterinarian. I may turn pro photographer in another 20 years or so but for the moment there are 4-legged lives to save.

I've been enjoying photographing people lately although you won't see many of those photos on flickr for privacy reasons. If anyone is interested in a wedding second shooter (Gold Coast or Brisbane area) I'd love it if you got in touch with me.

There are so many flickr photographers that inspire me with their talent. If I fav your shot, it is always genuine, you know I absolutely love it. Thank you for the time you take to view my photos. Constructive criticism is always welcome; I'm here to learn and improve. I enjoy photographing anything to do with nature. Recently I've found too many flickr photostreams I love, to continue to add everyone as a contact. Please accept my apology if I don't reciprocate, I add new contacts whenever I'm not struggling to keep up with viewing photos.

I haven't written many testimonials but I feel I must let anyone who hasn't discovered Kelpie1's work know that doing so will only bring delight and --I must disclose-- a good amount of envy! I haven't written many testimonials but I feel I must let anyone who hasn't discovered Kelpie1's work know that doing so will only bring delight and --I must disclose-- a good amount of envy! I've been a fan of Karen's work since I first discovered it about a year ago, and in that time I've seen her stream, which was always beautiful and interesting, evolve into a top-notch exhibit. Her animal portraits transcend 'great capture' and show us the warmth, beauty and artistic gifts of nature. What's more, she's a supremely talented shooter no wonder where she aims her Canon, and I'm delighted to see more people appearing in her stream. Good on ya, Karen, for discovering a gift that we're all getting to enjoy!
