Words, images, feelings, smells, sounds, rhythms: all sensation is tucked away in my psyche until it resurfaces unbidden in my work. My abstract paintings are built up in layers of acrylics and various mixed media, the images appearing intuitively as I go. It is all about the process and the physical act of creating: becoming the brush, engaging the surface and responding to it–then finding the delicate balance between intuition and editing to bring the composition to a satisfying conclusion.

Color intrigues me– not in the sense of ‘many’ or ‘bright’–but in the way colors interact with each other, creating luminosity or depth or changing the perception of a neighboring hue. Earth colors (warm) contrasting with cool, their complements and grays comprise my primary palette. Manipulation of this limited palette plus the use of contrasting textures defines my current work. Creating the illusion of depth and motion, subtle yet full of energy is always the goal.

I enjoy learning and periodically experiment with different media. Besides acrylics, I also work with beeswax, both hot–encaustic and cold–mixed with oil paint. I have found that working with new media often influences my approach to any of the others; a way to grow, to keep the process fresh.
