Recently in thinking about portraits, those photographs of people we all take from time to time I began to wonder why some photographers take better portraits then others. If you consider this question, you must first realize that people are alive. Yes, we breathe, yawn, dance around and occasionally do something productive. But what is it that makes a good portrait, frankly good? What are those photographers doing? After much deliberation, well, at least a few seconds, I realized that good portraits capture a sense of vitality, or life. Therefore good portrait photographers have the ability to bring out that sense of life in their subjects and go beyond the "Say cheese" moments which haunt us all. It is my opinion that Katie captures that sense of life in her work. Her portraits are the work of a photographer who approaches the making of images creatively and with a unique perspective. Her portraits go beyond simple depictions, there is substance to them and they evoke stories, emotions and imagination.
